Since the inception of the KAFP Foundation in October 1991 we have had an opportunity to support a number of programs which enabled medical students and residents to be closely associated with both the KAFP and the AAFP.

CURRENT ACTIVITIES

Annual Meeting

Understanding the importance of exposing students and residents to the issues surrounding family medicine and to encourage their participation, the chapter offers a reduced cost of $75 for resident and student members to attend the Annual Meeting and Scientific Symposium. Residents and Students are offered the opportunity to be moderators during the meeting with their registration, room, and mileage compensated.

Resident and Student Luncheon workshop

Finishing Medical School and finishing Residency are huge accomplishments but also times of change and preparation for your next adventure. We have created a workshop to help you navigate and get your questions answered.

For the MEDICAL STUDENTS: ERAS (Electronic Residency Application System), We will help you navigate which Residency Programs to apply to and how many.  Help you prepare your personal statement and how to get those important letters of recommendation.

For the RESIDENTS graduating and looking for their first job: the job search and what to expect, inpatient/outpatient/er, urgent care, DPC, FQHC.  What is a contract and how to start a solid review of it. Ongoing requirements - CME, State Board Requirements, ABFM requirements, credentialing once you find your job, and a discussion panel.

Family Medicine Resident Scholarly Exhibit

The chapter holds a scholarly activity poster contest for residents. Here, residents are given the opportunity to submit their project abstracts for review by a residency director and to receive feedback. Once their projects are revised and accepted, they are permitted to be featured at the KAFP annual Meeting and in the KAFP Journal. Anonymous judges are selected to cast ballots on the strength and weakness of the projects. 1st Place is awarded $300 cash and up to $1,500.00 to be used for travel funding to a national research conference. 2nd Place is awarded $200.00 and 3rd Place is awarded $100.00. Most years we’ve been able to pay for rooms and travel for all participants.

Family Medicine Medical Student Scholarly Exhibit

The chapter holds a scholarly activity poster contest for medical student members. Here, medical students are given the opportunity to submit their project abstracts for review by a residency director and to receive feedback. Once their projects are revised and accepted, they are permitted to be featured at the at the KAFP Annual Meeting and the KAFP Journal. Participants in the Scholarly Poster Activity will be included in a drawing for two-night stay and meeting registration for the KAFP Annual Meeting.  There will be two individual drawings worth up to $500.00 each for participants.  Most years we’ve been able to pay for rooms and travel for participants.

FMIG Visits

The chapter’s current President and Resident and Student Service Consultant, visits each medical school’s FMIG to increase student engagement within the chapter, to present new information concerning the future of family medicine, to promote attendance to the AAFP FUTURES Conference, and to create rapport with the students. Face to face interaction creates lasting relationships with students.

AAFP FUTURES Conference Scholarships

During the FMIG visits, medical students are encouraged to apply for the AAFP Family Medicine Leads Scholarships. When they apply, they are asked to send their essay responses to the chapter’s Communication Director. Based on the amount of funding, the KAFP Foundation reviews the essays and provides $600 supplemental scholarships to medical students who did not receive an AAFP scholarship.   Students are diligent in completing these requirements because of the rapport developed between them and the chapter through the constant interaction. Scholarships are distributed at the KY Row during the KAFP Foundation Breakfast.

KY Row

The KAFP Foundation coordinates a KY Row at the AAFP National Resident and Student Conference. The goal of this is to unify the KY residency programs to promote the Commonwealth’s medical community together.  KY Students are also invited to a KAFP Foundation breakfast. The KY residency programs are present at this event to answer students’ questions in a more relaxed environment. This permits KY medical students to interact with one another and to speak to KY residents about their experiences without any pressure.

Outstanding Senior Student Awards

The two allopathic medical schools within the state and one osteopathic school, each nominate a medical student to receive the KAFP Foundation’s “Outstanding Senior Student Award”.  Each scholarship is $650. The awards are presented at the graduation ceremony at each respective school.

Board Member

Family medicine residents and medical students are given the opportunity to volunteer as the resident and medical student delegate and alternate delegate to the KAFP Board.

Fleet Award

An accolade that acknowledges a young family physician who exemplifies personal, patient-centered care. This prestigious award has been generously funded by a grateful patient of Dr. Kevin Pearce. This patient wanted to inspire other family physicians to embrace a more personal and patient-centered approach to healthcare.  The award is in the amount of $2,000 and a recognition plaque.
